Sir Gary Sobers

Highest Team Total in Test Cricket History 952-6 Declared.

R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium (known prior to June 1994 as the Khetterama Cricket Stadium) is best remembered for holding the ... all » world record for the highest Test total - 952/6 declared by Sri Lanka against India in the first test of the 1997/98 series in which former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya scored 340 and Roshan Mahanama 225, the pair sharing the highest partnership for any wicket in Test cricket with 576 for the second wicket.

At close of play, Sri Lanka were 587/1 with Jayasuriya 326* and Mahanama 211* at the crease. Jayasuriya became the first ever Sri Lankan to score 300 runs in a Test. The West Indian pair of Garry Sobers and Frank Worrell were the only ones before today to bat throughout two consecutive days (against England at Bridgetown in 1959-60). On day five, Kumble got the break through for India, sending Mahanama (225r 753m 561b 27x4 0x6) back (lbw) with the scoreboard reading 615/2! Their partnership of 576 runs was the highest test partnership for any wicket. (previous: 467 MD Crowe and AH Jones, New Zealand v Sri Lanka at Wellington, 1990/91) Jayasuriya (340r 799m 578b 36x4 2x6) was the next to go, in the very next over, caught Ganguly, bowled Chauhan, with the score reading 615/3. Jayasuriya's marathon and chanceless innings of 340 was the fourth highest in test cricket, after Lara's 375, Garry Sobers' 365 (not out), and Len Hutton's 364. All the Indian fielders ran to congratulate him as he departed with his head held down as he had missed his chance to overtake Lara's record. They applauded him all the way to the pavilion (In Picture) from where he got a standing ovation. India had to suffer more batting practice by de Silva (126), Ranatunga (86) and Jayawardene (66). There were 58 extras when the innings ended at 952 for 6 wickets declared in 271 overs.

The team record 952/6d beat the previous best, 903-7d by England v Australia at The Oval in 1938 and still stands. This total is also the 3rd highest team total in First-class cricket (Highest: 1107, Victoria v New South Wales at Melbourne, 1926/27)

French cricket

French cricket is a simple game especially popular with children that requires only a cricket bat and a ball. The ball is soft, often a tennis ball. Any number of players can take part. French cricket is popular because it is easy to play; has almost no rules and no time limits; and requires no regulation field and no umpires or other officials.

As of 31 July 2007

The Chinese cricket team is the team that represents the country of the People's Republic of China in international cricket. They became an International Cricket Council affiliate member in 2004. [1] It should be noted that the Special administrative region of Hong Kong is a member of the ICC in their own right, becoming an ICC associate member in 1969. Hence, players from Hong Kong are not eligible to represent China in international competition.

Prior to the establishment of a recognised national side, the Shanghai Cricket Club, the largest club in the country, played games against many touring sides and effectively served as a defacto national side.

China are yet to participate in any international competition, though they hope to participate in the ACC Trophy for the first time in 2008. In addition to this goal, the Chinese Cricket Association has set itself other goals over the next 14 years, described by some as optimistic. [2] A list of these goals follows.

* 2009: Have 720 teams across the country in a well-organised structure
* 2015: Have 20,000 players and 2,000 coaches
* 2019: Qualify for the World Cup
* 2020: Gain Test status

The Shanghai cricket team was a cricket team that played various international matches between 1866 and 1948. With cricket in the rest of China almost non-existent, for that period they were the de facto Chinese national side.[1]

[edit] History

The Shanghai Cricket Club was formed in 1851, though the first record match did not take place until April 1858. The Shanghai team travelled to Hong Kong in 1866 to play against the Hong Kong cricket team, the first match in a series that lasted until 1948. In 1893, occasional matches against Kobe, Yokohama and Hangzhou began.[1]

Home matches were played on the present day People's Park. In addition to the matches mentioned in the previous paragraph, regular matches were also played against the Straits Settlements and Malaya.[1]

Following the last match against Hong Kong in 1948, political unrest meant that the cricket playing community dwindled, and cricket disappeared for around thirty years. Recently China has become a member of the International Cricket Council and the government is investing in the sport. Shanghai is today host to the Shanghai Sixes, a Sixes tournament involving teams from around the world.[1]

[edit] Players

The following players played for Shanghai and also played first-class cricket:

The Canada cricket team is the national cricket team representing Canada in men's international competition. It is run by Cricket Canada.

While Canada is not sanctioned to play Test matches, the team does take part in One Day International matches and also in first-class games (in the ICC Intercontinental Cup) against other non-Test-playing opposition, with the rivalry against the United States cricket team being as strong in cricket as it is in other team sports. The match between these two nations is in fact the oldest international fixture in cricket, having first been played in 1844.

Canadian cricket has tended to take a lower profile than most other sports, and the team tends to be composed of expatriates from more successful cricketing nations either trying to achieve a level of international experience or having been deemed too old for their respective national teams. The 2003 World Cup squad, for example, contained players born in Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and the West Indies.

Perhaps the most successful exponent of Canadian cricket has been all-rounder John Davison. Davison was born in Canada but played club and — occasionally — first class cricket in Australia, achieving a reputation as something of a journeyman. Taking advantage of his Canadian birth, he became a regular in the national squad. At the 2003 World Cup, Davison hit the fastest century in tournament history against the West Indies in what was ultimately a losing cause. One year later, in the ICC Intercontinental Cup against the USA, he proved the difference between the two sides taking 17 wickets for 137 runs (the best haul in first-class cricket since England's Jim Laker took 19 wickets in 1956) as well as scoring 84 runs of his own.

History

Early Days

It is generally thought that cricket was introduced to Canada by British soldiers after the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759, although the earliest confirmed reference to cricket is of matches played on Saint Helen's Island, Quebec in 1785 on what became the site of Expo 67.

The roots of modern Canadian cricket though come from the regions of Upper Canada, in particular Toronto, then known as York. During the early years of the nineteenth century, a schoolmaster by the name of George Anthony Barber encouraged the game there, and founded the Toronto Cricket Club in 1827. Barber instigated a game played between the Toronto Cricket Club and the cricket team of Upper Canada College in 1836, a game won by the college team. [1] This game has been annually ever since. As already mentioned, Canada played its first international against the USA in 1844 in New York at St George's Cricket Club, now the site of the New York University medical centre.

Late 19th Century

George Parr led an English team to Canada in 1859, which was the first ever international cricket tour. A product of the tour was a book by Fred Lillywhite entitled "The English Cricketers’ Trip to Canada and the United States", published the following year. On the tour, which also ventured into the USA, the team won all five official matches against a 22 of Lower Canada (by 8 wickets at Montreal, Quebec on 26 October-27 September), a 22 of the United States (by an innings and 64 runs at Holboken, NY on 3-5 October), a different 22 of the United States (by 7 wickets at Philadelphia on 10-12 October), a 22 of Lower Canada (by 10 wickets at Hamilton, Ontario on 17 October-19 October) and a further 22 of the United States (by an innings and 68 runs at Rochester, NY on 21 October-25 October). There were also some exhibition matches and two excursions to view the Niagara Falls.

When Canada became a nation in 1867, cricket was so popular it was declared the national sport by John A. Macdonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada. Unfortunately, the influence of baseball from the United States saw a decline in the popularity of cricket, despite tours from English and Australian teams. The third tour by an English team in 1872 featured none other than the famous W. G. Grace. The first Australian team to tour came in 1877, and they returned in 1893 beating Canada by an innings. [2] Three games were played against Ireland between 1888 and 1890, Ireland winning one, with the other two drawn. A tour of North America by the Australians in 1913 saw two first class games (both won by the tourists) against a combined Canada/USA team. [3] [4] The second of these, played at Rosedale, Toronto was the first first class match played in Canada.

1887 England tour

After an unofficial tour in 1880, which saw the Canadian captain arrested during a game against Leicestershire and the tour abandoned, the first official tour of the United Kingdom by a Canadian team took place in 1887. The tour started with two matches against Ireland, against whom Canada drew one game and lost the other, followed by two matches against Scotland with the same result. The tour then ventured into the north east of England with a defeat against the Gentlemen of Northumberland and a draw against Durham.

The tour then continuted with various matches against county sides and others, with wins coming against the Gentlemen of Derbyshire and the Gentlemen of Warwickshire. The Canadian team finished the tour with a win/loss record of 2/5 with the remaining twelve games all drawn.

1950s

The Marylebone Cricket Club visited Canada in 1951, the highlight of which was the first first-class game played by the Canadian national team, played in Armour Heights, Toronto, which was won by the visiting side. This was followed in 1954 by a tour to England on which Canada played eighteen games, four of which were given first class status, including one against Pakistan who were also touring England at the same time. [5] The MCC again visited Canada in 1959 under Dennis Silk, and played a 3-day game against a Canada XI in Toronto which they won by 10 wickets. They were undefeated throughout the tour, winning most of their matches by wide margins, but had a closely fought draw against the Toronto Cricket Club. However, it would be fifty years before Canada would next play a first class cricket match.

1960s

The annual series of matches between Canada and the USA continued, alternating between the countries. In the 1963 match in Toronto, Ray Nascimento scored 176, then a record for the series.

1970s

Canada drew a game against Ireland in 1973 [6], and the following year again embarked on a tour of England. The tour was a much lower profile than the 1954 tour, with the games being against club sides, county second XIs, and minor counties. Canada had a 4/6 win/loss record on the tour, with a further six games being drawn. [7] In 1979, Canada participated in the first ICC Trophy. They reached the final of the competition, which qualified them for the 1979 World Cup, where they played their first One Day Internationals. The World Cup was not a successful tournament for the Canadians though, and they failed to progress beyond the first round, losing all three games.

1980s

Canada participated in the ICC Trophy again in 1982 and 1986. They could not repeat their success of 1979 though, and failed to progress beyond the first round on both occasions. Other internationals in the 1980s include a no result game against Ireland in 1981, [8] and a 3 wicket loss to Barbados. [9]

1990s

The 1990s saw Canada progress up the international ladder, playing in three further ICC Trophy tournaments, their best being a seventh place finish in 1997. They also began competing in West Indian domestic one-day cricket in 1996, and competed in the Commonwealth Games cricket tournament in 1998, though they did not progress beyond the first round.

2000s

2000 saw Canada host the first ICC Americas Championship, a tournament which they won. The following year they embarked on a tour to Sri Lanka, but the highlight of 2001 was their hosting of the ICC Trophy. They finished third in the tournament, which qualified them for the 2003 World Cup. It was this ICC Trophy tournament that first saw the emergence of John Davison, who was to become one of Canada's most successful players.

Canada played various matches in the build up to the World Cup, visiting Argentina in April 2002, finishing as runners up to long time rivals the USA in the Americas Championship, swiftly followed by a fifth place finish in the ICC 6 Nations Challenge in Namibia. The West Indian A team toured Canada later in the year, and Canada won the one-day series 2-1, and drew a two day game. This was followed by Canada's best performance to date in West Indian domestic one-day cricket, winning two games in their first round group, just missing out on qualification for the semi finals.

The World Cup itself was a tournament of contrasting fortunes for the Canadians. They started with their first ODI win, over Bangladesh. Two games later saw them dismissed for 36 against Sri Lanka, then the lowest score in one-day international history. The next game against the West Indies saw John Davison score the fastest ever World Cup century, although Canada lost that game, and did not progress past the first round.

Present Day

2004 started badly for Canada, with a last place finish in the Six Nations Challenge in the United Arab Emirates after Canada lost all their games. They'd improved significantly by the time of the ICC Americas Championship in Bermuda, which they won. Also in 2004, Canada participated in the first ICC Intercontinental Cup, finishing as runners up to Scotland. The highlight of this tournament was the game against the USA in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, when John Davison recorded the best match bowling figures since Jim Laker's 19 wickets against Australia in 1956.

In 2005, Canada again finished third in the ICC Trophy, which gained them official ODI status from 2006 until the 2009 ICC World Cup Qualifier, as well as qualifying them for the 2007 World Cup. Their performance in the Intercontinental Cup that year was not as good as in 2004 however, as they did not make it past the first round.

In 2006, Canada put in good performances in the four-day ICC Intercontinental Cup, beating Kenya by 25 runs and Bermuda by nine wickets, but their one day form was a complete reversal, losing three times to Bermuda and Kenya, and a further loss to Zimbabwe.

In August, Canada took part in the first Division of the Americas Championship. They beat Argentina and long time rivals the USA, but lost to the Cayman Islands and eventual winners Bermuda, and finished third, their worst performance so far in this tournament.

In June and July 2008, Canada will host Bermuda for three ODIs and Intercontinental Cup matches against Bermuda and Scotland. In August, Canada will travel to Ireland for an ODI and an Intercontinental Cup match.

[edit] History

[edit] Beginnings

The first game of cricket in Belgium appears to have been a match played by British soldiers before the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The first record of organised cricket is a painting dated 1870 that hangs in the pavilion of Lord's Cricket Ground in London that depicts the opening of the Brussels cricket ground in 1866 by mayor Jules Anspach.[3]

The national team first played a match in 1905 when they played against the Netherlands. The match was played almost every year until 1986.[3] Belgium hosted a tournament as part of the 1910 Brussels Exhibition also involving France, the MCC and the Netherlands.[4] Belgium lost their match against the MCC by an innings[5] and lost to the Netherlands by 116 runs.[6]

[edit] ICC Membership

Belgium became an affiliate member of the ICC in 1991.[1] They began to play in European tournaments, playing in the ECC Trophy for the first time in 1999 when they finished last.[7] They fared better in the next tournament, reaching the semi finals of the 2001 ECC Trophy in Austria.[8]

They finished sixth in the ECC Trophy in 2003,[9] and gained associate membership of the ICC two years later.[1] Belgium finished fourth in the European Affiliates Championship in 2005[10] and will play in and host Division Three of the newly restructured European Championship in August 2007.[2]

[edit] About the Austrian Cricket Association

The Austrian Cricket Association is the National Governing Body of Cricket in Austria. It was founded in 1981 by Kerry Tattersall, as the Austrian Cricketers Association, following the re-introduction of cricket to Austria in 1975. Cricket was recorded as being played in Vienna as far back as the 1890s, traditionally by gardeners of mercantile families. During the post-war occupation of Austria, cricket was also played by allied forces members. Since 1992, the Austrian Cricket Association has been an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council, and it is one of the founding members of the European Cricket Council.

Executive Committee

Its Executive Committee is elected every two years and consists of five elected members. In March 2007, Michael Bailey was re-elected to serve a second term as Chairman, having previously served as Secretary, succeeding Andrew Simpson-Parker. Sivabala Nadarajah holds the position of Cricket Development Officer and Arvinder Ghai is the Association Treasurer. Graham Tebb subsequently took over Walter Blaschke's place on the executive committee following his election as Chairman of the Austrian Union of Cricket Umpires and Scorers (AUCUS). All officers are volunteer workers.

Member Clubs

The association's members are cricket clubs, with 13 member clubs as at 25 July 2007, each holding a single vote, with clubs having to be registered with the Austrian Vereinspolizei. Currently there are clubs from four of Austria's 9 federal provinces: Whilst the majority of clubs are based in Vienna, there are also clubs in Salzburg, Graz and Velden.

Competitions organised

The Austrian Cricket Association is responsible amongst other duties for the administration of organised cricket competitions in Austria, with the ACA Open League perceived to be its premier competition.

ACA Open League

The ACA Open League is a 50 overs single innings league, and in 2006 was split into two parallel conferences (Austrian Conference and National Conference) to allow more teams to enter the league. The top three teams of each conference qualified for the Super Sixes stage, with the top two contesting a final to decide the Open League Champions. Teams not qualifying for the Super Sixes stage played in localised plate competitions - the Viennese Plate and the Southern Plate.

Vienna Lions CC won the Open League in 2006, defeating Five Continents CC in the final played in September 2006 in Seebarn. United Nations CC won the Viennese Plate competition, with CC Velden '91 winning the Southern Plate competition.

ACA Trophy

Vienna Lions CC won the 2006 ACA Trophy (North). The competition has been regionalised since 2002, with Salzburg CC having dominated the ACA Trophy (South).

Austrian National Team

The Austrian national team is open to players who are qualified to play for Austria under the International Cricket Council's qualification criteria and fulfil a nationality and development criteria. The Austrian national team made its competitive début in 1990 in Guernsey and played regularly until 2003. In 2006 the national team was revived, playing two international matches against the Czech Republic.

[edit] Overview

Cricket Australia is an administrative organisation responsible for the promotion, development and organisation of cricket in Australia. Cricket Australia has six member organisations that represent each of the Australian states. These organisations are:

* Cricket New South Wales
* Queensland Cricket
* South Australian Cricket Association
* Tasmanian Cricket Association
* Cricket Victoria
* Western Australian Cricket Association

The Australian Capital Territory Cricket Association and the Northern Territory Cricket Association are non-member associations, although they participate in lower level Cricket Australia tournaments such as the Cricket Australia Cup.

Each of the member organisations elects representatives to the 14 man Cricket Australia Board of Directors, and to the Senior Management Team, which consists of about 60 members of staff. For historical reasons, the states are not represented equally on the board. The membership of the 14 man board is New South Wales (three Directors), Queensland (two Directors), South Australia (three Directors), Tasmania (one Director), Victoria (three Directors),and Western Australia (two Directors). The board develops Cricket Australia's strategic plan, but the plan is implemented by the Senior Management Team and the Chief Executive officer.

Each of the state cricket associations that are members of Cricket Australia also selects a representative side to participate in Australia's major domestic cricket tournaments.

Cricket Australia's organisational structure is designed to efficiently operate the game, and is divided into separate components focused on specific responsibilities, such as: Cricket Marketing Services, Cricket Operations, Finance and Business Services, Game Development, Legal and Business Affairs, and Public Affairs.

Cricket Australia also maintains a healthy but independent association with the Australian Cricketers' Association in order to provide proper player's rights and welfare requirements.

[edit] History

The first centralised authority for the administration of cricket in Australia was established in 1892 when representatives from the state associations of New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria came together to establish the Australasian Cricket Council, with the Sheffield Shield also established in that year. However the Australasian Cricket Council was disbanded in 1898.

What is now known as Cricket Australia was established in 1905 as the Australian Board of Control for International Cricket.[1] Before its establishment, tours by Australian teams to England were organised and funded by private groups or by the players themselves. Similarly invitations to English teams were made by private promoters or by individual clubs, such as the Melbourne Cricket Club.[citation needed] The predecessor organisation, the Australasian Cricket Council which had existed from 1892 to 1898 but was ineffective due to a lack of funding. Its one lasting action was to establish the Sheffield Shield, the major cricket competition between the Australian colonies.[2]

These early tours were lucrative for the players and promoters and cricket administrators looked to find ways to channel some of this money to the destitute clubs, through the State Associations. Formal discussions began in January 1905 in Sydney for the formation of a body to take control of tours from the players. A draft constitution was discussed by members of the New South Wales, Victoria, South Australian and Queensland associations.[3] The first meeting of the new board was held at Wesley College in Melbourne on 6 May 1905.

The foundation members were the New South Wales Cricket Association and the Victorian Cricket Association. South Australia's delegates refused to join the Board because the Board structure denied the players any representation. The Queensland Cricket Association was represented as an observer only.[1]

Queensland did decide to formally join the association with one delegate member the following year, and the constitution was amended in 1906, so that New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria would each have three permanant representatives, and Queensland one representative. In 1907 Tasmania was also permitted to send a single representative, and Western Australia did likewise in 1913. Changes to this structure were made in 1914 and 1974 respectively, when Queensland and Western Australia formally added to their representation to two each.

[edit] Name changes

Cricket Australia has had three different names since its foundation. They are:

* Australian Board of Control for International Cricket (1905 – 1973)
* Australian Cricket Board (1973 – 2003)
* Cricket Australia (2003 – present)

[edit] Finances

The organisation's revenue was AUD72 million in the year ended 30 June 2005 (AUD 83.8 million to 30 June 2004; this decrease reflects the fact that income streams vary greatly over a four year cycle depending on which teams/competitions Australia plays, rather than long term decline). Just over half of this came from media rights and just over a quarter from sponsorship.

[edit] Competitions

As well as responsibility for Australian international sides, Cricket Australia organises domestic inter-state cricket in Australia, including the three premier competitions in each of the major forms of the game. These are the Pura Cup in first-class cricket, the Ford Ranger One Day Cup, which is the domestic one-day competition, and the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash, which is the domestic Twenty20 competition.

Cricket Australia's competitions:

* Pura Cup
* Ford Ranger Cup
* KFC Twenty20 Big Bash
* Cricket Australia Cup
* Women's National Cricket League

Cricket Australia also provides awards for various categories of players, including Test Players of the Year, One Day Players of the Year, Bradman Young Players of the Year, State Cricket Players of the Year, Women International Cricket Players of the Year and the Allan Border Medal for the overall best Australian cricket of the year.

Cricket Australia also honours players for exception service to the game of cricket in Australia by annually adding former players of great distinction to the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame.
